Reequipping - BAF received two more UAV´s
Brazilian Air Force received on January, the 30th, two more UAV´s. The two RQ-450, manufactured in Israel, are in assembly phase at Santa Maria Air Base (RS) and the first flights are programmed to march. The new platforms shall be used on the next Agata Operation, on border areas, and also during the Confederations Cup. The investment was of R$ 48 milhões.
Now, they are four units that make part of Horus Squadron. Two were already in operation since 2011. Although they are same model, the platforms received now have improvements, such as day cameras with a better resolution IR and improved communication systems. It was also received a radar that allows images even through clouds.
Real Deployment
The first BAF experiences with UAV´s were on 2010. On the second year, with Horus Squadroon, there was an operations debut during Agata Operation. A Hermes 450 also participated of security mission on Rio + 20. On those missions, the aircrafts made day and night images and transmitted alive to Control Center.
Besides real operation, Horus Squadron also performs “doctrine development” missions when there is tactics elaboration on military use in conflict situations. On BAF those aircrafts are commanded on ground by aviators with combat aircraft and helicopters experience besides military mission knowledge and air space control rules.
